Artist's Talk: Ruby Chishti
July 21, 2010 - 2 - 4 pm

Ruby Chishti will speak about her art, its process and development.

Born in 1963 in Jhang, Pakistan, Ruby chishti now lives and works in USA and Pakistan. As a fourth daughter in a middle class Pakistani family Ruby experienced closely the bias that society holds towards a female child, her work often voices the very notion. She Studied at National College of Arts, Lahore. Soon after graduating in 1988 she disappeared from the art circuit for almost 11 years to take care of her severely disabled mother.
Listen to how this and other experiences in her life have shaped her work, the choice of material and location, in a rare view inside an artist's mind.

Film Screening of The Sky Below an award-winning film on the 1947 Partition of the Indian Subcontinent
Q & A with artist and filmmaker Sarah Singh
and exhibiton of her Photography
Saturday, January 16, 2010 6:30 PM

To create the documentary THE SKY BELOW, Sarah Singh traveled solo--without a crew-- across one of the world's most volatile regions tracing culture, history, society and the politics of divide and rule.

THE SKY BELOW is a contemporary exploration of the creation of Pakistan and the 1947 Partition of the Indian Subcontinent, weaving together 5000 years of culture, while investigating the lingering after-effects of this six-decade old political divide, most tragically witnessed by Kashmir. With her life in the hands of strangers and sometimes gunmen, Singh traveled from the desert of Kutch to the snowy mountains of Kashmir; and from the seaside city of Karachi to the spare but volatile terrain of the Khyber Pass.

"A comprehensive look at the Indo-Pak issue" -- Georgina Maddox, The Indian Express

"One of the best films on Partition I have ever seen" -- Kanak Mani Dixit, Himal Magazine
